1834 Fourth Street
Berkeley, CA 94710
510.644.3002
FourthStreet.com
Map and Directions

Fourth Street offers a variety of shopping and dining choices whether your interests be high fashion, earth-friendly goods for the home and body, distinguished foot wear, fine jewelry, bagels OR dinner with a friend. This regional shopping district, referred to by Sunset Magazine as “one of the eleven great streets of the West” offers a great public experience. Stroll, Shop, Dine. Visit 60 fine boutiques and restaurants.

The roots of the Fourth Street shopping area began in the mid 1960′s with a vision to develop the area into an Industrial Park; thus, a redevelopment area was declared by the City of Berkeley. The area is bound by Cedar Street, Sixth Street, University Avenue and Frontage Road. As many as eighty old homes were moved or destroyed in the process. In time, the redevelopment agency’s vision failed to attract industry. Berkeley’s business image was so tarnished during the 1960′s by the endless news accounts of political turmoil and activism that businesses just passed on Berkeley’s new industrial park.

The land lay fallow for over 15 years. However, many businesses thrived within and around the Fourth Street area for decades and continue to this day. Spenger’s Fresh Fish Grotto has served the public in this area for almost 100 years. Truitt & White Lumber Company has been in business for over 60 years. Brennan’s is still famous for it’s Irish Coffee and fresh food.

By 1976 the Berkeley Redevelopment Agency had given up on the industrial park idea and requested proposals for the development for a small parcel on Fourth Street. Abrams/Millikan & Kent, a small design/build firm specializing in hand crafted houses and offices proposed a concept of a Building Design Center – conceived as a place catering to the home owner, presented by a guild of businesses specializing in furniture, stained glass, solar power, hot tubs, lighting, textiles and interior design. Along with the craft shops and showrooms, AMK built the Fourth Street Grill, which soon became famous throughout the country for Mark Miller’s great cuisine. Thus, by 1981 a shopping neighborhood, with a regional clientele, was born.

During the 1980′s Abrams/Millikan & Kent and later Drew Properties developed several additional properties on the East side of Fourth Street creating the nucleus of a vibrant shopping corridor. Slowly the street started to move beyond crafts and services, while still keeping its focus on shops devoted to the environment of the home. In the last phases of development, extending shopping North and South, the focus on design has broadened to include a number of independent shops devoted to fashion and food. Throughout the development, a philosophy has been maintained of trying to attract retailers that provide unique, interesting and high quality merchandise.

THE ALBATROSS – BERKELEY’S OLDEST PUB!

1822 San Pablo Ave
(between Delaware St & Hearst Ave)
Berkeley, CA 94702
(510) 843-2473
Albatrosspub.com

Known for its cozy, laid-back vibe, the Albatross sits slyly on San Pablo Ave., a local secret with an atmosphere that greets you like the guts of an old wooden pirate ship, overflowing with frothy beer and competitive spirits.

Live Music, Original Art, and Board Games
Groove on funky wall art and live music, warm yer bones by the fire, and chill at wooden tables playing Connect Four, Scrabble, Boggle and dozens of other board games.

Darts, Pool Table, and Quiz Night
Nail bullseyes at one of the Albatross’s six professional dart boards or slap down a fiver and let ‘er rip at our weekly Tuesday darts tournament.

Chalk up and take your tipsy buddies for a ride Paul Newman-style at our pool table.

Or if you’re more into the cerebral mind melt thing, compete for free drink chips at the Albatross’s Sunday night Brainstormer Trivia Pub Quiz.

Insane Beer and Scotch Selection
Thirst? What’s that? With a bunch of Belgian beers and microbrews that would make beer snobs blush, the Albatross caters to your taste buds old school. You want a classic single malt? Honey, you’re home.

Dogs Welcome and B.Y.O.F(ood)
Though we don’t like raucous jerk offs, we do like bending the rules. You don’t have to screw the pooch – you can bring Fido in on his leash until 8 p.m. You can also bring your own grub, we don’t mind. Heck, we’ll even let you have a bowl of steaming hot popcorn from the Albatross’s antique phone booth for a buck.

Need Some Space?
Though we like to think of ourselves as the unsmothering type, we understand if you need some space. We take reservations for parties, large and small, and rent the pub out for large events when we’re closed. We’re good at relationships and will respect your party’s boundaries, so long as it notifies us of its needs well in advance.

Let Your Hair Down if You Have Hair
We’re the oldest pub in Berkeley, which means we’ve successfully precipitated drunk dialing since, well, before cell phones even existed. Original owners Bill Scanlon and Phil Randall opened our doors in 1964. Three years later, brothers Val and Bob Johnson steered The Bird (our preferred nickname) into your hearts for the next 30 years.

In 1997, the pub received a woman’s touch when Wendy Halambeck and Linda Zsilavetz restored the whole freaking place – from the walls to the specially designed bar hooks for gal’s purses to the restrooms as personable and spotless as your grandmother’s water closet.

But take our word for it, you won’t think the bathrooms are the best part. (Though they’re pretty damn good.)

As a community we are all very familiar with the deadly incident that took the life of Oscar Grant. It was devastating… we remember the day like it was yesterday. We lived through the riots and fear for months with hopes that eventually the family would find Justice for the death of their young son who was killed on the platform at the Fruitvale BART station in the early morning hours of New Year’s Day 2009.

This is why we couldn’t be happier for the recent success story of movie “Fruitvale” for winning the top award “Jury Prize” at this year’s acclaimed 2013 Sundance Film Festival.

Directed by Ryan Coogler, the film also stars Melonie Diaz, Ahna O’Reilly, Chad Michael Murray, Kevin Durand, and Academy Award-winner Octavia Spencer.

Based on “the true story of Oscar Grant, a 22-year-old Bay Area resident, who crosses paths with friends, enemies, family, and strangers on the last day of 2008.”

Congratulations to “Fruitvale” for your stellar performance. We couldn’t be a prouder community for your achievement.

We always wax poetic about the talent in the East Bay. Our humble home is the launch of many talented individuals, especially in the music business. To be successful, which generally means leaving the Bay Area, musicians must have talent and drive. Gone are the days when artists would perform in small venues just waiting to be “discovered” and get a record deal. Now a successful artist is generally a musician first and then their own promoter, marketer, and producer secondly. They must be dynamic in their efforts to promote themselves and get their sound out. Love him or hate him, Justin Bieber started with just a YouTube account. Closer to home, Berkeley rapper Lil B (Brandon McCartney) “The Based God”, became popular with both his solo work and with “The Pack”; very likely this was on account of him having created hundreds of different social media accounts to promote himself. So when we come across musicians with both talent and drive hailing from the East Bay, we take note. We recently came into contact with one such group, The Brother-Hood Music (TBHM) and had the opportunity to interview them to get their views on life, making it as a musician in the East Bay, and most importantly, where to find the best ice cream sandwiches.

TBHM is comprised of three young gentlemen from the East Bay that have gone off in different directions but inevitably have met one another along the way in different cities and Universities to create a unique sound. The group is comprised of Eric Merrida Jr. (Wet Money E) from Richmond California, Rolando Oliver (Bailey Ro) from Richmond California, and Jermayne Slaughter (Money Mayne) from Oakland California. Their producer, who hails from Richmond, CA, is Paul Williams (YpOnTheBeat); he has production credits with NhT Boyz, E-40, The Jacka, IAMSU, and Mistah FAB among others.

TBHM has had collaborations with other local and national artists. Oakland ingénue Kreayshawn shot and edited their popular “Ride By” video. (Many just attribute her success to her one catchy radio played “Gucci Gucci” song, but she has a more skilled repertoire than most are aware of; further proof that to succeed as a musician in the Bay you need to have an array of skills.)

Their sound is Bay Area, but there’s a clear southern influence going on. Musicians from the Bay can’t deny their roots and generally are the forerunners in creating unique sounds. TBHM recognized this when they would see their style being quickly replicated while attending Southern University (SU) in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. While they still retain their Bay Area sound, it’s likely their time at SU had an impact on the smoothness of their music. SU also had an impact on their skills. Wet Money E and Baily Ro graduated with a degree in Business Marketing and Money Mayne in Mass Communications with a concentration in Public Relations. They utilized their time at SU to gain some of the necessary skills to promote themselves, and build their brand. They have a large following that is a result of their unique style, skill at self-promotion and branding including their own Tshirt brand, and their ability to play large shows.
While their talents are each unique, each one of The Brother-Hood, including their producer, have one very important thing in common: their love for C.R.E.A.M., Berkeley’s addictive ice-cream sandwich store that has a cult following. You’ll likely find them there getting inspiration for their next move. Check out one of the new songs, Calculatin’, from their new album, Ocean’s 3. As Wet Money E puts it, the album is a combination of their talent and drive “…one of our favorite movies is Ocean’s 11; in the movie they were intelligent people with unique skills who came together to hit a lick, and got away with it. And that is what we feel like we are doing with our music.”

Innovative and contemporary, Ozumo’s cuisine is offered in an elegant, modern Japanese design-inspired restaurant located in the heart of Oakland’s Uptown District. this sleek and sophisticated space boasts Oakland’s largest Sushi Bar (the heart of the Ozumo dining experience), a traditional robata grill, an alurring dining room and sake lounge as well as three private dining rooms and chef counter seating.

Their Sushi Bar is specially designed to allow guests to experience the time-honored tradition of sitting eye to eye with sushi chefs, and have the options of ordering dishes from the sushi or full menus, including omakase style. The Robata, or “around the fireplace” grill is reminiscent of the japanese custom of cooking in the irori, the traditional charcoal-fired hearth once found in every home. they serve very unique and specialty small plates.

Their Sake Lounge’s modern and sleek decor is a perfect venue for gatherings with colleagues or friends. The menu carries one of the widest selections of premium imported sake in North America, as well as a knowledgeable staff that provides the best recommendations.

Headed by Executive Chef Yo Matsuzaki, the menu is contemporary and authentic. Dishes are prepared with bold intense flavors with an emphasis on high quality, and fresh ingredients. He brings together the meats, poultry, seafood, and vegetables in the most extensive and innovative expressions of Japanese cuisine. There is never a protocol on ordering from the menu, dishes are meant to be shared at the table or enjoyed individually, izakaya style.
