The Terrace Room in Oakland Appoints Jack Andrews As Their New Executive Chef

The Terrace Room Dining Room

Venerable Venue Also Plans Dramatically Refurbishment Their Historic Dining Room

The Terrace Room Restaurant & Bar in Oakland has announced that it has appointed Jack Andrews as their new Executive Chef. While bringing a fresh vision to the restaurant’s menu, he is maintaining the hallmark focus on New American cuisine prepared with seasonal, often locally sourced, sustainable, organic ingredients.

Comments one of the proprietors of The Terrace Room, Randall Berger, “I am excited for Jack to bring his experience and perspective to the restaurant. He has trained and worked in some remarkable kitchens and has now crafted a sophisticated yet approachable menu that really suits our vision.”

Chef Andrews took over his family’s cooking responsibilities in his early teens often utilizing his grandmother’s recipes and cookbooks. A stint in the Navy resulted in time spent in Japan and the chance to experience that country’s culture. Subsequent opportunities to travel further inspired his love of the culinary arts and over time he worked in kitchens in California, New York, New Jersey and Arizona. Bay Area venues have included Restaurant Lulu, Blue Plate, Mayfield Cafe, Franny’s, Arturos and Square SF. Professional experience has also included running bars, consulting and menu design. Most recently Andrews was Regional Executive Chef for corporate food provider Guckenheimer.

Notable new Terrace Room menu items include such starters as Marrow and Tonnato, Leek and Goat Cheese, Manilla Clams, and Kale Caesar Salad. Among the main course offerings are Wild Salmon, Grilled Flank Steak, and Gulf Shrimp Fettuccini. Not to be missed is The Terrace Room weekend brunch.

Also of note, and on the occasion of the venue’s 90th anniversary, are substantial dining room renovations and upgrades that will be completed this coming summer. These will include new chairs, table tops, carpeting, light fixtures, window shades and a large dance floor made of white oak stained in a herringbone pattern.

The restaurant showcases California wines and a full bar with classic, contemporary and original cocktails. Late night weekday Happy Hour (5:00 to 10:00 p.m.) affords guests the opportunity to partake of specially priced food and beverage options.

Housed in an historic landmark building (circa 1927) with a distinctive combination of Art Deco and Mediterranean styling, the glass-enclosed Terrace Room dining room with a panoramic view of Lake Merritt evokes the elegance of a bygone era. Highlights include elaborate wrought-iron pillars that open to breathtaking views, a series of murals by a well-known Bay Area artist depicting scenes of Lake Merritt and the surrounding area, and period light fixtures. This elegant room has long been “the place” to hold lavish weddings, celebrations and private parties, and entertainment greats such as the Count Basie Band have played there.

The Terrace Room Restaurant & Bar is located at 1800 Madison Street, at Lakeside Drive, in Oakland, California. The restaurant is open Monday through Friday for lunch and dinner and on Saturday and Sunday for brunch. Visit The Terrace Room on the Web at www.theterraceroom.com.
