Tasting Room Hours: Wednesday – Saturday 12-7pm, Sunday 12-6pm
St. George Spirits, well known for their propensity to push the limits in creating delectable spirits at their distillery, offer respite from your life in their popular tasting room. I soon discovered this after I was three tastings deep in their Alameda based distillery, swilling vodka in the afternoon.
If you’ve never heard of this talented group of artisan distillers, than you have surely tasted or seen their popular vodka, Hangar One. Or perhaps you noticed that in 2007, St. George Spirits was the first distillery to sell the first domestically produced absinthe since its ban in 1912. Needless to say, if you appreciate transcendent spirits, ranging from Kaffir Lime infused vodka to Qi, Numi Tea infused liqueurs, than you will most definitely appreciate the experience of their tasting room.
If you happen to live on the “other” side of the Bay, you can easily take the ferry from San Francisco to Alameda, or if you’re lucky enough to live in the East Bay, take a quick jaunt over to the island. St. George Spirits and their tasting room are located in a refurbished airplane hangar in Alameda. On a clear day, you have a beautiful view of the Bay and San Francisco. You’ll be able to swill in style as you relax in their tasting room and glance into their distillery. The distillery is filled with large, polished copper pot stills which make you feel as if you are in an adult version of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.
When you’re tasting, you’ll notice that the tastes of their spirits are pure, there isn’t any cloying artificial flavors going on. Even after you fourth or fifth taste, although you may feel a little tipsy, you won’t feel overwhelmed by any synthetic, syrupy tastes or smells. Their staff is knowledgeable and laid back, so be prepared to come and enjoy yourself and their spirits! Next time you have a spare afternoon, grab a few friends and take advantage of this world renowned distillery’s tasting room.
