The Lake Chalet interior design has been done by CCS Architects, known for their work on Perbacco, La Mar, Restaurant LuLu and La Toque. The work amounts to a complete restoration of the Lake Merritt Boathouse and the creation of distinctive dining venues that have unique character but also relate to one another through color and materials to create a cohesive whole. The design is contemporary while at the same time paying homage to the boating history of the lake and the early 20th century Spanish influenced architecture of the building. Materials used include blue painted wood, white marble, blackened steel, lacquer red metal and mahogany.
The restaurant occupies the Pumphouse building, the two adjacent wings and the main outside dock/patio and boat launch pier, with a total of 325 indoor and 100 outdoor seats. The Pumphouse consists of a 60 seat dining and lounge dining area, two 12 seat private dining rooms with a fireplace, and a 80’ long 35 seat marble topped bar with panoramic lake views. The north wing dining room (the Lake Room), which projects out over the lake, seats 112 and has an intimate bar/lounge area and another fireplace. The south wing (the Gondola Room), which also projects out over the lake, includes a 100 seat event and party space equipped with its own catering kitchen and bar. The outdoor dockside seating affords great opportunities to bird watch thanks to the surrounding area’s official sanctuary status.
